Entering the Tengger caldera during a nice day is really wonderful. It is difficult to shape sentences describing this huge and beautiful place of visible earth geology. The walls, the plains, the volcanoes - the Tengger caldera is a must see. Hiking through it is a real special experience, no Java traveller should miss.

The June 9th 2004 I used for visiting the Tengger caldera. One day before an eruption of the famous Bromo volcanoe in the caldera caused two deaths. Fortunately it happened while I enjoyed my "free day" after the Semeru trekking. From the place where I entered the caldera the view onto Semeru was perfect.

The lower picture shows the street leading to Ranu Pani. It is one of the better parts. Short before entering Ranu Pani the street is covered with deep holes. People use still normal cars but a 4-wheel-drive is really adviseable.

One major attraction in Tumpang is an ancient temple in the middle of the town. It size is quit small but the carvings on his side tell a long story. To different style are used during the time. The guide at the temple made great efforts to explain every detail of the temple and the story it told.
Furtunately I had the daughter of my host with me. She spoke quit good English. A must - she wants to visit a Singaporian school in the near future. I wish her all the best.

Back in Tumpang the plastic bottles were a good proof for the altitude difference we encountered this day.

Trekking back to Ranu Pani Semeru showed again some of his nice looking ash plumes.
The volcanoe is a perfect contrast to the foggy rain forrest in front of the picture.

At Ranu Kumbolo we encountered an Indonesian trekking group. One guy was able to speak a little bit English. It was quit interesting to chat a little bit with him. It looked like that a lot of Indonesians know the jewels in their country and organize trekking tours to the volcanoes.
Finally the picture with the whole group was a must - no excuse was allowed ;-)

Haha, schau mir wahrscheinlich den Film an, bevor ich jemals das Spektakel dazu angeguckt hab. Ist zwar nur ein paar Kilometer von zu Hause. Bis jetzt konnte ich einen Besuch jedoch glücklicherweise immer wieder abwenden ;-)

Gestern sollte es mit der letzten Bahnverbindung zurück in die Schweiz gehen. Doch schon in Friedrichshafen kam es zur Katastrophe: Der Anschlusszug wartete nicht trotz verspätetem IRE.
Tja, dann ging es los: Diskussion mit Bahnpersonal und anderen Fahrtgästen mit dem gleichen Problem. Ausgabe eines Taxi-Gutscheins Singen-Zürich (!!!) - da ich mich bereit erklärte mit einer anderen Dame mit ähnlichem Ziel mitzufahren, sollte ich später noch Penner spielen dürfen. Fahrt mit dem Bummelzug nach Singen. Fahrt zusammen mit der Fahrtbekanntschaft im Taxi nach Zürich (laut Taxi-Fahrer kommt sowas wohl oft vor!). Fahrtpreis deutlich über 120 Euro. In Zürich rächte sich dann die Entscheidung als Fahrtziel Zürich angegeben zu haben. Der Taxi-Fahrer weigerte sich, mich mit dem Gutschein in Baden abzusetzen. Das würde wohl das Budget sprengen - Zug ging keiner mehr von Zürich. Eine Taxi-Tante wollte 80 Franken bis Baden.
Naja - laut 20 Minuten gibt es sowieso extrem viel Obdachlose in Zürich. Also ein stilles sicheres Plätzchen gesucht (Baustelle in der Innenstadt) und losgeschlafen. War nicht gerade warm aber ich hab es doch tatsächlich geschafft, den ersten Zug zu verpassen - verpennt ;-)
Und das alles weil ein DB-Kollege darauf beharrte, dass der Zug nach Singen pünktlich abzufahren hat. Sicherlich gut gemeint. Doch was bringt es, wenn der Rest der DB mit Verspätung fährt?
P.S.: Übrigens hiess die Dame Gitte, macht zur Zeit ein Praktikum in einem Zürcher Architekten-Büro, hat heute den 22. Geburtstag und war herrlich aufgedreht.
