Singapur is most famous for its large freight harbour. The location directly at the busy Malacca Strait makes it ideal for trading. This Thomas Stamford Raffles recognized in 1819 and established a British trading outpost in the Dutch dominated region. This was the foundation of the town known today as Singapore.
